The Guidance Center (TGC) is the Community Mental Health Center and Certified Behavioral Health Clinic serving Leavenworth, Atchison, and Jefferson counties in Kansas. The Guidance Center (TGC) is currently seeking a  Billing and Coding Specialist . The Billing and Coding Specialist position is responsible for assisting with billing code development, preparing and submitting electronic and paper claims to payers, and following up on unpaid or denied claims in a timely manner. Review charges, post payments and adjustments and reconcile activity to daily ledgers. Monthly review of aged receivables and follow-up to complete.

Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for reviewing commercial payer, Medicaid, and other assigned guarantor accounts for outstanding balances. Re-bill unpaid charges with the most expedient method. Keep the supervisor informed of any concerns with specific aged accounts.
  1. Post client, insurance, and Medicaid payments to EHR as assigned.
  1. Run appropriate EHR reports to ensure accounts balance and enter balancing information on monthly spreadsheets. 
  1. Complete reconciliation log entry, bank deposit, and EHR report. 
  1. Post payments, ensuring charges are at correct liabilities, enter adjustments for over or under payments as needed. Confirm co-pay amounts and update EHR when necessary. 
  1. Recycle denials, when possible, report ineligibles or other insurance to appropriate office.
  1. Update the person seeking services’ financial eligibility in the EHR when needed
  1. Re-bill any corrections or changes that can be made for reprocessing
  1. Transfer charges to other liabilities when necessary
  1. Notify Front Desk Staff, Clinician, and Accounting/Billing staff when provider person seeking services/plan issues exist
  1. Process electronic, HCFA 1500 claim forms, and paper billing for services within required timeframes. 
  1. Collaborate with other billing staff, clinicians, and administrative staff to ensure a smooth revenue cycle for provided services. 
  1. Keep informed of ongoing coding guidelines from official sources (AMA, CMS, MCO) as well as specific payer policies and procedures. 
  1. Collaborate with the IT team and Billing Manager to implement new billing codes or update current codes in the EHR. 
  1. Ensure appropriate use of CPT codes and modifiers in coordination with the Quality department. 
  1. Understand productivity and efficiency goals established by TGC for the position and work towards the achievement of such.
  1. Adapt to changing work priorities and a fast-paced environment while maintaining a professional attitude.

 

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:  

Required: High school diploma of GED and certification of Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from the AAPC 

Preferred: Associate's degree in medical Billing and Coding, Health Information Technology, or related field and certified as a CPC+CPB from the AAPC. 

EXPERIENCE: 

Required: A minimum of one year's experience in billing and coding.

Preferred: Experience with billing or coding at Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBCH) or Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) and Netsmart E.H.R. products (My Avatar and/or Avatar NX) are preferred.
