Expatiate Communications is seeking a highly skilled and nationally On-Contract Certified Translator and Interpreter to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will bridge language barriers, enabling seamless and accurate communication of complex business concepts, analyses, and recommendations across various languages. Responsibilities:Specialized Written TranslationTranslate highly sensitive and technical documents from English to Spanish and vice versa, with absolute precision in the context of special education. Utilize Translation Memory (TM) tools and Terminology Management (TMG) systems to ensure consistency in specialized special education vocabulary. Review and proofread translated documents for linguistic accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and compliance with special education legal terminology. 2. Specialized Verbal InterpretationProvide real-time interpretation (simultaneous and/or consecutive) for critical special education-related meetings and interactions. Settings include: IEP meetings, 504 Plan meetings, parent-teacher conferences, student evaluations, due process hearings, mediation sessions, disciplinary meetings, professional development workshops for educators, and consultations with school/district leadership.Interpret complex legal, medical, and educational jargon accurately and impartially, maintaining the tone, nuance, and intent of the speakers.Facilitate clear and effective communication between families, school personnel, legal representatives, and other stakeholders.3. Terminology & Cultural ExpertiseDevelop, maintain, and update glossaries specific to special education terminology, federal/state regulations (e.g., IDEA, Section 504), and commonly used acronyms.Possess a deep understanding of the cultural nuances and communication styles prevalent in the diverse communities served by special education programs.Advise on culturally sensitive communication strategies when interacting with non-English speaking families.4. Ethical Practice & Confidentiality Adhere strictly to professional codes of ethics for interpreters and translators, especially regarding impartiality, accuracy, and absolute confidentiality of all sensitive student, family, and firm information.Understand and maintain compliance with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and other relevant privacy regulations.5. Collaboration & AdvisoryWork closely with consulting teams, special education directors, school administrators, and legal counsel to ensure precise communication.Provide insights on linguistic and cultural considerations that may impact service delivery or parent engagement.Qualifications:Solid grasp of educational assessment, instructional strategies for students with disabilities, behavior management, and various disability categories.Proficient in using Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, terminology management software, and virtual meeting platforms. Exceptional communication, empathy, and active listening skills. Ability to remain neutral and facilitate effective communication in emotionally charged or legally sensitive situations.Proven ability to maintain composure, discretion, and a high level of professionalism in all interactions.Ability to quickly adapt to various client environments, communication styles, and the fast-paced nature of consulting engagements.Bachelor's degree in Translation, Interpretation, Linguistics, Special Education, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.Requirements:Active, recognized national or international certification in translation and/or interpretation (e.g., ATA Certification, NAATI, or equivalent recognized by a professional body). Native-level fluency in Spanish and exceptional command of English, both written and spoken. Minimum 1-3 years of professional experience as a certified translator and interpreter, with a significant portion specifically in educational, legal, and/or medical settings that directly involved special education.Demonstrated understanding of special education terminology, laws (IDEA, Section 504), regulations, and the IEP/504 process. Familiarity with the structure and operations of K-12 school districts and educational agencies.This job description is intended to provide a general overview of the essential functions and responsibilities of this position.
